Setting Up Vacation Mode on a Garage Door Opener

Vacation mode, sometimes called lock mode or away mode, temporarily disables remote and keypad access to your garage door, which is a simple but often overlooked way to add peace of mind while you are traveling. Here is how it typically works and how to turn it on and off.

What Vacation Mode Actually Does

When enabled, vacation mode blocks signals from handheld remotes and wireless keypads from opening the door, while still allowing the hardwired wall console inside the garage to operate normally. This protects against a lost or stolen remote, or someone guessing a keypad code, while you are away from home for an extended period.

Activating Vacation Mode on the Wall Console

On most modern openers, the wall-mounted control panel inside the garage has a dedicated Vacation or Lock button. Pressing and holding this button for a few seconds activates the mode, usually confirmed by a blinking light on the console itself.

Activating Vacation Mode Through a Smart App

If your opener is Wi-Fi connected, the companion smartphone app often includes a vacation or away toggle in its settings menu. Enabling it through the app has the same effect as the physical wall console button, and some apps let you schedule it automatically based on your calendar or location.

Turning Vacation Mode Off

To deactivate it, press and hold the same wall console button again, or toggle the setting off in the app, after which remotes and keypads will resume working normally.

What Vacation Mode Does Not Protect Against

Vacation mode only blocks the wireless remote and keypad signals, it does not physically lock the door track or prevent someone from manually lifting the door if the emergency release cord is accessible from outside, such as through a side window or vent. If you are concerned about forced entry while away, consider a separate physical garage door lock or slide bolt as an additional layer.

Combining Vacation Mode with Other Security Steps

Before leaving for an extended trip, it is worth also disconnecting the external keypad’s power source if it has a removable battery, securing the emergency release cord with a zip tie as a temporary deterrent that still allows release from inside, and asking a neighbor to periodically check that the garage remains closed.

Checking That It Actually Worked

After activating vacation mode, test it immediately with your remote before leaving to confirm the door does not respond. This only takes a minute and avoids any doubt about whether the feature engaged correctly on your specific opener model.
